Cardamom Maple Butter Coffee

June 23, 2020 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Butter, Coconut Oil, Maple Syrup. Yes, the ingredients are not your typical coffee accoutrements.

The first time I made a Butter Coffee, or Bullet Proof Coffee, I wasn’t sure either. That one contained butter, coconut oil, nut milk, raw honey, and vanilla extract. It may sound strange, but all together they create a foamy, delicious concoction with no dairy but plenty of energy staying power from the slowly digested fats.  So a great first coffee of the day, as far as I’m concerned.  This and a soft steamed egg, and I’ve had a great start to the day.

Butter was the most disconcerting component (would it separate, be oily, greasy?). But not a deal-breaker.  I love my butter.  Using salted butter will even give it that salted caramel taste.  Butter, check. Raw Coconut oil, check.  Nut milk, check.  Raw honey, check.  These days I like using a good Canadian maple syrup.  It adds a lovely earthy depth to the final flavour. And while I love vanilla, today I’m sharing this coffee using cardamom, it’s just grand!  And no worries, the butter and coconut oil emulsify and foam up to a drink that you wouldn’t even realize contains them.

I first make up a pour-over, my go-to way for preparing one cup.  I find it such a therapeutic way to prepare coffee- you have to be there in the moment, to slowly, methodically pour the hot water over the grinds.  But the result is a fabulous smooth cup of coffee.  Make sure you are using a good bean or medium ground quality coffee.  For today’s coffee, I used Van Houtte’s House Dark Roast.  My favourite Van Houtte coffee, so I was happy to partner with them to share this coffee with you all!

The coffee goes into a small blender (I use a Nutribullet type for this)  Along with all the other ingredients.  Organic butter, grass-fed if possible: the Vitamin K that the cows get from grazing is good for clearing the arteries, and the healthy fat that butter contains can move through your body easily.  Maple syrup is filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes; it fights agains inflammation, aids in digestion and is lower on the glycemic index than many other sweeteners.  Coconut oil boosts good cholesterol, helps against heart disease and high blood pressure and aids with digestion.  All in all, a great combo!

Whip the ingredients together and watch how creamy and foamy it gets.  And so tasty!  And potentially messy!  I learned this one the hard way, so you won’t have to: make sure you have closed the lid on the blender tightly!  And if you don’t have a NutriBullet type blender, an immersion blender will work just fine. Either way, fabulously yummy and rather addictive.

Key: Have your butter at room temperature.  This will help speed up the blending process without cooling down the coffee too quickly.

Try this and let me know what you think.  It is a fun and healthy coffee, or at least no less healthy than the double whip, caramel macchiato, or Dalgona coffee craze of the moment!

And these days, with not being able to go to our favourite diner for breakfast and bottomless cups of steaming coffee, this is a pretty good alternative.

See this link for a great assortment of Van Houtte coffees that will arrive at your doorstop!

Happy Java Jiving!

Ingredients

  • 8  oz  Van Houtte House Dark Roast brewed coffee  I use the pour over method, but you can prepare it any way you'd like
  • 1  tbsp  organic grass fed butter if at all possible, for the health benefits
  • 2 tsp  pure Maple syrup
  • 2  tsp  coconut oil
  • 1  tbsp  dairy or nut milk  I use almond, but you could use cashew or coconut (optional)
  • 1/4  tsp  cardamom

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in a blender.  Or use a frother or wand blender.  Even a Nutri Bullet type works well.  Just seal tightly since you will be putting it upside down.
  2. Blend well. Enjoy
